Updated Emergency Measures by the Canadian Federal Governmenton March 24th
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau highlighted the following updates today (Tuesday), as Canada continues to address the COVID-19 pandemic:
- House of Commons reconvenes today to pass emergency legislation on COVID-19. The Prime Minister announced that he had spoken with all three opposition leaders regarding passing this legislation so that Canadians can receive the support they need at the earliest possible.
- The Prime Minister emphasized the need for speed during such an unprecedented situation and period; and expressed his trust in Canada’s democratic institutions and his commitment to protect and uphold democratic institutions while seeking to deliver support to Canadians as quickly as possible.
- The Canadian government continues to work with officials in various countries and the airline industry to get stranded Canadians back home:
– To-date over 1 million Canadians have returned back to Canada;
– The first flight has departed from Peru today – with priority being given to unaccompanied minors and individuals with serious illness; more flights will be available later this week.
– In addition to the flights from Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Spain, Peru and Morocco, the government is also working to organize flights from Panama, Tunisia, and Ukraine.
- Will over 1 million Canadians travelled back to Canada, the need for Self-Isolation of the travellers is emphasised. Self-isolation of travellers for 14 days is mandatory, not a recommendation. The government is committed to taking more stringent measuresshould self-isolation protocols be ignored.
During the 14 day self-isolation, recent travellers and others under self-isolation, should not leave their home – including for essential reasons such as grocery shopping etc.
- From the March 23rd call between the Prime Minister and the Premiers, the following have been established:
– Commitment to continue collaborating to ensure that all regions have what they need, including testing equipment and medical supplies;
– Commitment to working even more closely together to do more to keep Canadians across the country safe;
– A review of the emergency measures that have been put in place at the provincial and territorial level.
- The Federal Emergencies Act is not yet ruled out , If compliance to expert advice and government guidelines regarding measures to prevent the spread of the virus is not met, the government is willing to take additional steps as a last resort.
