Statement by Gary Anandasangaree, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Rouge Park, on First Anniversary of Easter Sunday Attacks in Sri Lanka:

Today marks the first anniversary of the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka. On April 21, 2019, the horrific attacks took place at St. Anthony’s Church in Colombo. St. Sebastian Church in Negambo, and Zion Church in Batticaloa as parishioners attended Sunday mass on one of the holiest days of the Christian calendar. More than two hundred and fifty people died and many more lives were changed forever. As we commemorate those lost in this cowardly act of violence, I wholeheartedly express my solidarity and support for the victims of this senseless acts. Sadly, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the curfew on the island, neither Easter Sunday mass or commemorations are possible today.

[robo-gallery id=”516″]In the immediate aftermath of these attacks, many members of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka were summarily arrested, harassed and discriminated by the Sri Lankan state. The events following the Easter Sunday attacks serve as a reminder of the violence, surveillance, oppression and fear in which many people live.

Last year we saw the island move back towards an authoritarian rule with the election of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Since coming to office in October, the new regime has rejected the United Nations Human Rights Council Resolution 30/1 and 40/1; promoted alleged war criminal Shavendra Silva, who was recently banned by the US State Department to Sri Lanka’s Chief of Defence Staff; and pardoned Staff Sergeant Sunil Ratnayake of killing Tamil civilians including children.

The Sri Lankan state continues on a path of impunity, and authoritarianism thereby eroding the confidence of Tamils, as well as religious minorities on the island. Sadly, full accountability has evaded even the Easter Sunday attacks and prospects for long term peace and reconciliation remain diminished. The international community must escalate all accountability measures available to them either unilaterally, or through multi-lateral bodies, to ensure those responsible for alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and the Easter Sunday bombings are brought to justice.
